QUICK ANSWER

Read the first relevant error before downloading anything. Missing model files, unknown node types, incompatible model components and exhausted memory are different failures. Save a working baseline, change one item and rerun the same workflow.

Start with the failure category

ComfyUI's troubleshooting documentation distinguishes missing models, loading problems and architecture mismatches. A model absent from a loader list calls for a different investigation from a tensor-shape error. Installing more custom nodes is not a general solution for either.

Use this triage table before changing the environment

This is our diagnostic order, not a replacement for the complete traceback. Save the exact message and the workflow version first.

Observed failureFirst checkAvoid initially
Model name absent from loaderFile, directory and search pathRenaming unrelated model files
Unknown custom node typeNode's official project and compatibilityInstalling every suggested pack
Tensor shape mismatchCheckpoint, encoder and VAE familyRepeatedly downloading the same file
Out of memoryResolution, batch and available memoryChanging multiple settings together

If a model is missing, check the loader's expected files

The official model guide lists model directories and supports additional paths through extra_model_paths.yaml. It also describes compatible component families. Check the workflow author's file requirements and the loader type together; a filename extension alone does not identify the role or architecture. A file that is present on disk can still be the wrong component.

If a custom node is missing, find its real source

Comfy's support page explains that custom nodes can be installed in local and Desktop environments. Our recommendation is to verify the project's author, installation instructions and required version before making a change. A custom node is software, not merely a visual block. Keep a copy of the working environment and review dependency changes rather than treating a suggested pack as automatically trustworthy.

Restore a small known-good workflow

Use an official example that matches your installed model family and attempt one small output. If it works, add the failing workflow's components gradually. If it fails, retain that smaller reproduction for the bug report. This approach reduces the number of variables; it does not promise that every third-party workflow is compatible. For memory-specific diagnosis, follow the VRAM and offloading guide for concepts, then use settings documented for your actual image runtime.

Keep a recovery log you can share safely

Our suggested log records what changed, the first error and whether the original baseline still works. Remove usernames, paths that reveal private projects, tokens and personal prompts before sharing it publicly. Start from the ComfyUI beginner workflow and check model download safety before adding unfamiliar files.

REPRODUCIBLE CHECKLIST
  • Record ComfyUI and custom-node versions.
  • Save the workflow and exact first error.
  • List required model components and their sources.
  • Change one dependency or setting at a time.
  • Confirm whether the known-good workflow still runs.
CLEAR ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Will installing custom nodes fix a missing checkpoint?

Not by itself. Verify the required model file, location and loader.

Why does a workflow show tensor shape errors?

One documented cause is mixing incompatible model components. Check the exact traceback and architecture requirements.

Should I update everything at once?

Our recommendation is to preserve a baseline and change one item so the result can be traced.
