EmbeddingGemma 2 maps supported media into a shared embedding space. Its value is finding the right item; generating a grounded answer remains a separate part of the system.
What the October 6 launch describes
Google describes a 740-million-parameter multimodal embedding model with an 8K-token context and Apache-2.0 licensing. Its quantized Pixel 11 Pro example reports approximately 191 MB active RAM for text-only weights and 567 MB for the full multimodal model. Keep the device and configuration attached to those figures: they are Google-reported model measurements, not a complete application memory budget or a guarantee on another machine.
Start with a retrieval question you can label
Our suggested trial is a small personal media library: find a slide containing a specific diagram from a natural-language description. Label which files genuinely answer each query before running search. Include distractors that share colors or words but not meaning. Evaluate the top few returned items against those labels. A good-looking similarity score is less useful than showing that the intended item is found without crowding it out with plausible but irrelevant neighbors.
One vector space does not erase preprocessing choices
Our recommendation is to record how text is split, how video frames are selected and which encoder components are enabled. Preserve an identifier connecting every vector to its original item and position. If a query finds a relevant frame but the system cannot show where it came from, the result is hard to trust. When changing the embedding configuration, rebuild a controlled test index rather than comparing outputs from incompatible representations.

Plan the whole index, not just model weights
An application must also account for decoded media, vectors, metadata, an index and temporary processing work. Measure loading and steady-state retrieval separately. Our suggested budget sheet records library size, vector dimensions, peak RAM, indexing time and query latency. No memory measurement was performed for this article. Use the VRAM and offloading guide for general measurement boundaries, while remembering that an embedding pipeline is a different workload from token generation.
The answer layer needs its own evidence rules
If you add a language model after retrieval, require it to cite the original item and distinguish a found fact from an inference. Our practical test includes a question whose answer is absent from the library; the correct behavior is to say that evidence is missing. Retrieval quality and answer faithfulness should be reviewed separately. The weekly checklist places this release alongside generative systems without treating them as interchangeable products. For the slide trial, include a text query that refers to a relationship shown only in the diagram rather than a word in its title.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a chatbot model?
No. Its role is creating representations for retrieval; an answer-generating system needs additional components.
Does the reported RAM figure cover my full index?
Do not assume so. Budget and measure vectors, metadata, media processing and runtime memory separately.
What is a useful retrieval metric?
Measure whether the known relevant item appears among the returned results, including queries with distractors or no answer.
